Maybe when throwing wet clay on the window sill, DIEM PHUNG THI was lucky to realize that when she threw a new piece of earth, the old one faded and realized that when she threw a new piece of clay to the old piece of clay, the old faded and the old has been changed to create the new. Therefore, she did not create one thing but the combination. Moreover, like in all the philosophies, in order to discover the boundless and eternal universe, we must convert the basic concepts. Like the Book of Mutation, there are only contiguous lines, discrete lines and chopstick piling. Even though DIEM PHUNG THI has seven shapes, finally there are only round and square shapes and more than that square shape is basic ( it originates from DIEM PHUNG THI’s nature. She likes to search but she is also lazy and she likes to do quickly so it is easy to carve round shapes than to make square shapes). But both round and square shapes can be multiplied and piled easily.
She said that she is lazy but in 1994, she had 40 paintings. In 1995, she had 75 statues (some of them are old) to be exhibited in Hanoi. This time, she astonished everybody. Seeing her paintings, from “Laureate”to “Your Lunar New Year Dress”, I find that her paintings seem to come from the remote past of a young girl who liked funny things and bright colours. Something like paper objects for worship. They may be useless and frivolous but they may be spiritual. Together with meditative sculpture and unique jewelry, DIEM PHUNG THI has made the viewers thrilled, admired and bewildered….
